Jal Shakti Abhiyan -Steps to Make It More Impactful
As the Government of India has highly ambitious plans to resolve the existing water crises, there is a dire need for everybody to understand the targets and outcomes of the scheme.
If the period of 2014-2019 was the phase of driving and upscaling sanitation in the nation, then the period of 2019-2024 is going to be about highlighting the importance of water. The rising water emergency is making the country to ring bells while consequentially implementing a strong political commitment in place.
As promised by the ruling party during its election manifesto, a dedicated Ministry of Jal Shakti was introduced in May 2019. It came up to be an immediate response to the rising water crises across the nation. The launch of the committee also witnessed the reorganization of existing departments and ministries like the River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation, Ministry of Water Resources, and Ministry of Drinking Water & Sanitation.
The Introduction of Jal Shakti Abhiyan
Within a month of making the announcement of launching the Ministry of Jal Shakti, the Government of India unveiled the Jal Shakti Abhiyan or JSA. It is an extensive campaign for water conservation that is built on the concept of citizen participation to ensure water conservation throughout the nation.
On a short-term basis, the campaign will emphasize integrating demand & supply management of water at the localized level -including the creation of local infrastructure for ensuring source sustainability with the help of groundwater recharge, rainwater harvesting, and management of household water sources for reuse.
On a long-term basis, the government has come up with the JJM or Jal Jeevan Mission. The ultimate objective is to make sure that piped water supply is delivered to all rural households by the time of 2024.
Government Supporting the Jal Shakti Abhiyan
The government aims at achieving broader plans to resolve the existing water crises. Still, there is a dire requirement to explain the targets and outcomes of JSA in an achievable and tangible manner. Rainwater harvesting turns out to be a major intervention. Therefore, it should be executed seriously in the identified water-stressed zones (around 256 of them) wherein availability of groundwater has reached over-exploited and critical levels.
While JSA indicates the positive motives of the government at water conservation with the help of the participation of individuals, important measures in the direction can be more impactful. Water serving as the basic means of survival, JSA should not fall back in the achievement of top-quality, actionable, and timely results.
